´ Dressing
Dressing is covering of wound after
cleaning and applying medicine dressing should always be sterile to prevent
wound infection and to promote wound healing .
´
´ objectives of dressing-
´
Dressing is used to cover the wound.
´
It is used to prevent infection
´
It is used to absorb any discharge from the
wound.
´
It is used to control bleeding. and
´
It also used to prevent further injury.
´ Types of dressing-
´
Dressings are of two types-
´
Adhesive dressing and
´
Non adhesive dressing
´
Adhesive dressing-
it consists of a sterile pad of absorbent gauze. It is held in place by a layer
of adhesive material and example is Band-Aid
or Handy-Plast. before applying this type of dressing we should clean
the skin around wound.
´
Non adhesive dressing-
there are of three types of non-adhesive dressings.
´ Readymade style
dressing .- This type of
dressing consists of sterile gauze covered by
a cotton pad attached to a roller
bandage to hold it in position. this dressing is enclosed and sealed in
protective covering.
´ Gauze dressing -Gauze
dressing- it consists of several layer of gauze to cover large area of wound.
it is very observant and soft this dressing should be covered by cotton
pad
´ Improvised dressing-Improvised Dressing- it is made up of any soft clean material
to cover the wound. Such as a clean handkerchief, a piece of linen, a clean
tissue paper etc.
´ Principles of
wound Dressing –
´
While applying dressing we should wash our
hands thoroughly.
´
We should not touch inner part of the
dressing because it is sterile.
´
we
should not talk or cough over the wound or dressing.
´
the dressing must be covered with Cotton
pads .
´
Dressing should cover complete wound.
´
it should be retained in place by a plaster
or bandage .
´
´ BANDAGE- A bandage is a piece of material used either
to support a dressing / splint, or on
its own to provide support to or to restrict the movement of a part of the
body. The process of applying bandage is known as bandaging.
´ Objectives of
bandaging –
´
To retain the dressing in place.
´
To retain the splint in place.
´
To stop the bleeding.
´
To provide support to a limb or joint
´
To restrict movement.
´
´ Types of bandages
–
´
Mainly there are two types of bandages.
´
Triangular bandage
´
Roller bandage
´
Triangular
bandage
´
It is a triangular shaped cotton clothe
which have one base, two sides , one point and two ends.
´
Use of Triangular Bandages-
´
Arm Sling- the best use of triangular
bandage is applying arm sling. It is used to support forearm and hand in case
of injury to the upper limb.
´
For applying arm sling put one end of
triangular bandage over unaffected shoulder with the point on the injured side.
´
Head Bandage- another important use of
triangular bandage is applying head bandage.
´
For applying head bandage put the base of
triangular bandage over forehead.
´
Take the ends behind the head, crossover
the ends and tie on to base of the bandage on forehead as shown in the picture.
´
Chest Bandage / back bandage- another
important use of triangular bandage is applying Chest Bandage / back bandage.
´
For applying Chest Bandage / back bandage
put the point of triangular bandage over unaffected shoulder and base
horizontally across chest or back as shown in the picture.
´
tie the ends to each other and to point as
shown in the picture.
´
Shoulder Bandage - For applying shoulder bandage place the
center of the bandage on the shoulder
with the point over the side of the neck reaching the ear.
´
Carry the ends crossed, and tie the knot on
the outer side so that the lower border of the bandage is in fixed position.
´
Apply an arm-sling and turndown the point
of bandage over the knot of the sling.as
shown in the picture.
´
place the point of bandage on the back of
the upper arm and the middle of the base on the back of the forearm.
´
Cross the ends in front of the elbow, then
round the arm and tie the ends above the elbow.
´
Turn the point down and pin it low down as
shown in the picture.
