APGAR SCORE-

Ø  The APGAR score is a simple assessment telling about newborn baby’s general condition based on observations in the first few moments of life. This test is done to check whether the newborn baby needs help in breathing or is having heart problems.

Ø   Ø  In 1952, Dr. Virginia Apgar established a scoring system that was a rapid method of assessing the clinical status of the newborn infant at 1 minute of age and the need for prompt intervention to establish breathing.

Ø  This scoring system provided a standardized assessment for infants after delivery.  The Apgar score tells us about clinical signs of neonatal depression such as cyanosis or pallor, bradycardia, depressed reflex response to stimulation, hypotonia, and apnea or gasping respirations

Ø   The Apgar score provides an accepted and convenient method for reporting the status of the newborn infant immediately after birth and the response to resuscitation if needed

Ø  Apgar stands for the following criteria:

Ø  Appearance

Ø  Pulse (heart rate)

Ø  Grimace (reflexes)

Ø  Activity (muscle tone)

Ø  Respiration (breathing effort)

Ø  In  other words we can say that Apgar score consists of five components:

Ø  1) Color of baby’s skin, 2) heart rate of the baby, 3) reflexes, 4) muscle tone, and 5) respiration status of the newborn baby.

Ø  each of which is given a score of 0, 1, or 2.

Apgar score is assessed and reported at 1 minute and 5 minutes after birth for all infants, and at 5-minute intervals thereafter until 20 minutes for infants with a score less than 7.

Apgar score 7 and above is normal.

A score of 4–6 as moderately abnormal.

A score of  3 and bellow as severe abnormal.
