NIDDCP-
Government of India launched national goiter control programme in 1962
with emphasis on production and distribution of iodized salt. But even after 3
decades the prevalence of the disease was still high and the iodine deficiency
manifestations were not limited to endemic goiter… …. but to a wider range of
disability including deafness, mutism, mental retardation and impairment of
intellectual and motor functions. So in 1992, the National Goiter Control
Programme (NGCP) was renamed as National Iodine Deficiency Disorder Control
Programme (NIDDCP).
OBJECTIVES OF NIDDCP-
Ø The important objectives and
components of National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Programme (NIDDCP)
are as follows:-
Ø Surveys to assess the magnitude
of the Iodine Deficiency Disorders.
Ø Supply of iodated salt in place
of common salt.
Ø Re-survey after every 5 years
to assess the extent of Iodine Deficiency Disorders and the impact of iodized
salt.
Ø Laboratory monitoring of
iodized salt and urinary iodine excretion.
Ø Health education and Publicity
regarding iodine deficiency disorder prevention.
ACTIVITY UNDER NIDDCP-
Ø All states and UTs completely
banned the use of common salt and promoted iodized salt.
Ø Iodine deficiency disorder
control cells were established in all
states and UTs
Ø Financial assistance is given
to states for setting up Iodine Deficiency Disorders monitoring cells in states
Ø National reference lab is
established in Delhi to monitor Iodine Deficiency Disorders
Ø Procurement of salt testing
kits in endemic areas to spread awareness about IDD
Ø Performance based incentive is
provided to ASHA for conducting salt tests.
Ø Conducting IDD survey and
re-survey to assess the magnitude of IDD.
Ø Manpower strengthening is being
done by training of health workers at NICD
Ø Community awareness by health
education regarding Iodine Deficiency Disorders
