MID DAY MEAL SCHEME-
Ø The
mid-day meal programme (MDMP) is also known as School Lunch Programme. This
programme has been in operation since 1961 throughout the country. The major
objective of the programme is to attract more children for admission to schools
and retain them so that literacy rate is increased. Later it as merged with mid
day meal scheme.
Ø Mid day
meal scheme was launched for children in which one meal is provided to all
children enrolled in government schools, government-aided schools, local body
schools, special training centres (STC) and madrasas and supported
under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan
Ø Mid Day
Meal Scheme was launched in India on 15th August 1995 under the name of
‘National Programme of Nutritional Support to Primary Education (NPNSPE). In
October 2007, NPNSPE was renamed as ‘National Programme of Mid Day Meal in
Schools, which is popularly known as Mid-Day Meal Scheme
Ø In
September 2021, the Mid-Day Meal Scheme was renamed as ‘PM POSHAN’ or Pradhan
Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman. PM POSHAN will extend the hot cooked meals to
students studying in pre-primary levels or Bal Vatikas of government and
government-aided primary schools, in addition to those already covered under
the mid-day scheme.
OBJECTIVES-
Ø To increase
the enrolment of the children belonging to disadvantaged sections in the
schools.
Ø Leading
enrolment to increased attendance in the schools.
Ø To retain
children studying in classes 1-8.
Ø To provide
nutritional support to the children of the elementary stage in drought-affected
areas.
MAIN FEATURES OF THE
SCHEME-
Ø It is the
world’s largest school meal programme aimed to attain the goal of
universalization of primary education.
Ø The
Ministry of Education is the authorized body to implement the scheme.
Ø It is a
centrally sponsored scheme in which 60 percent cost is shared the central
Govt..
Ø Under the
MDM rules, schools are empowered to utilize other funds for midday meals in
case MDM funds get exhausted.
Ø On
occasions where schools and other required bodies are unable to provide cooked
meals to children; they are to provide food allowances to beneficiaries.
Ø Under the
MDM rules, a cooked mid-day meal with minimum 300 Calories and 8 to 12 grammes
of protein content should be provided to all the children
Ø Use whole
wheat or broken wheat (dalia) for preparing mid-day meals is prefered. Some
times rice-dal combination is cooked.
Ø The
schools procure AGMARK quality items for preparation of midday meals.
Ø The meals
are to be served in the school premises only.
Ø Each school
should have a hygienic cooking infrastructure to cook midday meals in a
hygienic manner.
