Ø BLOOD DONATION-

Blood can not be prepared in labs so it is
needed to be harvested from a living body if it is needed for a patient. Blood
donation is a process of making on blood available for the needy through a
blood bank. It is a life saving activity so it is called as biggest donation.
Ø TYPES OF BLOOD DONATION-
Ø
Blood donation is of three types-
Ø
01. Replacement blood donation- in which
relatives or friends of a patient donates blood for the patient for his current need.
Ø
02. Voluntary blood donation- in which a person donates blood for humanity ( any one
in need). We need to increase voluntary donations.
Ø
03. Autologous Blood Donation- in this type of
blood donation a patient donates his/her blood to be stored, in case there is a
future need for infusion for himself/herself. Here the patient himself or
herself acts as the blood donor. This may be done prior to an elective surgery.
Ø WHO CAN DONATE BLOOD
Ø
It is recommended that a man can donate blood
once in every three months and a woman can donate blood once in every four
months, having following criteria, can donate blood
Ø
Age – 18 years to 65 years.
Ø
Weight – more than 45 kg.
Ø
Vital signs- BP, temperature and pulse should be
in normal range on the day of donation.
Ø
Childbirth– Should have delivered at least 1
year ago and stopped lactation.
Ø
Hemoglobin– Hemoglobin should be more than 12.5
grams.
Ø
Malaria- Should Not have been treated for
malaria in last 3 months
Ø
Current infection- Should NOT have Hepatitis B,
C, Tuberculosis, Leprosy, HIV.
Ø
Apart
from these main criteria, confirmation of eligibility to donate blood is done
by professionals attached with Blood banks after careful physical examination
and health history.

BENEFITS OF BLOOD DONATION-
Ø
01. Self Respect- blood donation gives a sense
of self respect as you have become a donor.
Ø
02. Satisfaction- saving lives gives a sense of
satisfaction and because only a great person have the eligibility to save
lives.
Ø
03. Social respect- blood donation is a selfless activity so
society also respects the donors.
Ø
04. Improves mental health- blood donation
improves emotional wellbeing. It help to reduce negative feelings and provide a
sense of belongingness.

05. Reduces iron load of body- Donating blood regularly may lower iron
stores and this may reduce the risk of heart attack. High body iron stores are
believed to increase the risk of heart attack.
Ø
06. Periodic health checkup- today’s life is
very busy. Normally we do not get time for routine health checkups. But during
blood donation process, pulse, blood pressure, body temperature and hemoglobin
levels are checked as a routine process. Donated blood is also tested for
several diseases, such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, syphilis etc. if tests
are positive e are informed by the blood bank

PROCESS OF BLOOD DONATION-
Ø
Blood donation is a simple process. The voluntary blood donor can visit blood
donation camp or a licensed blood bank.
Ø
Before blood donation the donor should take a
full meal.
Ø
At blood bank/ camp first of all a registration
form is filled for blood donation
Ø
Normally it takes 9-10 minutes to fill the
registration form. It includes identification data of blood donor and health
history and consent to donate blood.
Ø
Next step is physical examination by a medical
officer. At this step basic tests such as blood grouping and hemoglobin are
done and vitals are checked, health history is taken and eligibility to donate
blood is ensured.
Ø
Actual blood donation process takes only 6- 8
minutes. A phlebotomist inserts needle into a vein and 350-400 ml blood is
collected in a bag.
Ø
After this process donor is sent to observation
room and refreshment is served to replenish the fluid loss. After 10 minutes
donor can go home.
Ø
AFTER EFFECTS OF BLOOD DONATION-
Ø
Blood donation is a simple process and normally
no harmful effect are observed only simple effect may be seen some times ( not
always) such as a little pain at
puncture site, oozing blood at site, weakness, dizziness etc. these signs are
minor and taken care of blood bank staff if they appear. You should leave site
only hen you feel physically fit and fine.
