BLOOD PRESSURE MONITORING
blood pressure (BP) is defined as the force of
blood exerted against the arterial wall. It reflects the blood viscosity
(thickness) and resistance of blood vessel.
To terms are used for blood pressure-
Systolic and Diastolic
Systolic blood pressure is the highest arterial pressure when the
heart contracts and pushes blood into arteries.
Diastolic blood pressure is the lowest arterial pressure
when the heart relaxes to fill with blood and not pumping blood into arteries.
Different types of apparatus are used for blood
pressure monitoring The most commonly used devices are:
1. manual mercury sphygmomanometer, which measures blood
pressure using mercury
2. manual aneroid sphygmomanometer, which measures blood
pressure using air
3. electronic automated devices, which measure the sound
of the blood as it passes through the artery, and then display the pressure on
a monitor.
PREPARATION OF ARTICLES-
•
A tray containing-
•
BP apparatus
•
Stethoscope
•
Pen and BP chart
STEPS OF PROCEDURE
•
Explain procedure and ensure adequate understanding
obtain client’s co-operation
•
Ensure client is positioned correctly lying or sitting.
Blood pressure readings should be taken in the same position and on the same
limb each time if possible.
•
Ensure correct-size cuff. Selection of correct cuff size
is essential for accurate reading.
•
Apply the cuff 2.5 cm above the antecubital fossa with
the client’s palm upwards, ensuring that the cuff is level with the
sphygmomanometer and the client’s heart and tubing's should be at center
portion of anticubital fossa
•
If you are using digital BP instruments than press start
button. Cuff inflation will start and after completion of process result will
flash on screen.
•
If you are using manual BP instruments than inflate the cuff
with the help of bulb after placing stethoscope over the brachial artery.
•
Inflate the cuff again to approximately 20–30mmHg above
the estimated systolic reading than start deflating the cuff slowly and listen
the sound.
•
Note the first sound that you hear , this is systolic BP.
•
Note the point at which the sound disappears this is the
diastolic BP
•
Deflate the cuff completely and remove from patient’s
arm. Replace the articles and record the result in patient’s record.
