MENTAL HEALTH

·      The WHO defines mental health as a state of well-being in which each individual is able to realize his or her own potential, cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively, and make a contribution to the community.

·      Mental well-being is characterized by adequate to high-level functioning in response to routine stress and resultant anxiety or distress. Nearly all of us experience emotional problems or concerns… 

·      On some occasions when we are not at our best. We may feel lousy temporarily, but signs and symptoms are not of sufficient duration or intensity to warrant a mental illness.

 

MENTAL ILLNESS

       Mental illness is a psychological or behavioral disorder that alters thinking, mood, and the capability of performing activities of daily living. It is impairment in one or more important areas of functioning.

 

Characteristics of mentally healthy person

·      A mentally healthy person has an ability to make adjustments in any situation.

·      A mentally healthy person has a sense of personal worth, feels worthwhile and important.

·       Mentally healthy persons do not become overwhelmed by emotions, such as fear, anger, love, jealousy, guilt, or anxiety.

·      Mentally healthy persons have lasting and satisfying personal relationships.

·       A mentally healthy person solves his problems largely by his own efforts and makes his own decisions.

·       He has a sense of personal security and feels secure in a group, shows understanding of other people’s problems and motives.

·      A mentally healthy person has a sense of responsibility and always ready to take responsibilities.

·      He can give and accept love.

·      mentally healthy persons feel good about themselves

·      He lives in a world of reality rather than fantasy.

·      He shows emotional maturity in his behaviour, and develops a capacity to tolerate frustration and disappointments in his daily activities.

·      A mentally healthy person has a variety of interests and generally lives a well-balanced life of work, rest and recreation.
