The National Filaria Control Programme
Objectives
1. Reduction of the cases of filaria in remote areas and2. Control in urban areas through recurrent anti-larval and anti-parasitic measures.
activities under the program
Initially the activities were mainly confined to urban areas. later it was extended to rural areas . main activites includes
1. Vector Control through anti-mosquito spray and appropriate larvicides;2. Biological control through larvivorous fishes;
3. Enviromental hygiene through source reduction and water management;
4. Anti-parasitic measures through diagnosis and "treatment of microfilaria carriers and cases; and
5. Information, Education, and Communication to generate community awareness.
NATIONAL VECTOR BORNE DISEASE CONTROL PROGRAMME (NVBDCP)
The National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme was launched in 2003.it is an umbrella programme for prevention and control of Vector borne diseases. Earlier the Vector Borne Diseases were managed under separate National Health Programmes, but now NVBDCP covers all 6 Vector borne diseases namely: 1. Malaria 2. Dengue 3. Chikungunya 4. Japanese Encephalitis 5. Kala-Azar 6. Filaria (Lymphatic Filariasis)
THE MAIN ACTIVITIES OF THIS PROGRAMME ARE AS FOLLOWS:-
1. Surveillance as it was done under NMCP
2. RunningMalaria Clinics
3. Drug Distribution Centers(DDCs)
4. Fever Treatment Depots(FTDs)
5. Spray Operations to stop mosquito breeding
