Non-governmental organizations are organizations that are independent of any government. They are usually non-profit. Many of them are active in humanitarian or social areas.

voluntary health agency. Any nonprofit, nongovernmental agency, governed by lay or professional individuals and organized on a national, state, or local level, whose primary purpose is health related. This term applies to agencies supported mainly by voluntary public contributions.

Some important health agencies are

1.    HIND KUSTH NIVARAN SANGH (Indian Leprosy Association )-
The Hind Kusht Nivaran Sangh (HKNS), the Indian Leprosy Association, registered in 1949   is successor of the British Empire Leprosy Relief Association (BELRA), which was founded well back in 1925 with the objectives of serving leprosy afflicted individuals, removing stigma of leprosy from the society and promoting social & research activities in the field of leprosy in India.
HKNS has been doing following activities:
·         Opening of skin clinics, roadside clinics & hospitals for leprosy
·         Looking after the inhabitants of leprosy colonies
·         Production and distribution of health education and publicity material on leprosy.
·         Publication of quarterly Indian Journal of Leprosy and bi-monthly news bulletin Kusht Vinashak for leprosy workers and the general public.  
·         Production and distribution of leprosy seals to create awareness about leprosy and help other organizations to raise funds for their work through the sale of these seals.
·         Observance of Anti-Leprosy Day on the 30th January every year to create mass awareness about leprosy.

2.    THE INDIAN COUNCIL FOR CHILD WELFARE-
ICCW was established in 1952. Rajkumari Amrit Kaur was one of the founding members of ICCW. It has a network of state councils and district councils all over the country

Activities of ICCW-

·         Advocating Children's Rights
·         Creches for children of working and ailing mothers
·         Training programmes for child care workers
·         Sponsorship for School Education of under-privileged children
·         Projects for Street and Working children
·         Scrutiny of Adoption Cases
·         Rehabilitation of Abandoned Children
·         Institutional and day care services for differently abled children
·         Programmes for children in difficult circumstances
·         Programmes with special focus on the girl child

3.     Bharat Sevak Samaj
Bharat Sevak Samaj is the National Development Agency sponsored by the Planning Commission, Government of India to ensure public co-operation for implementing government plans. The main purpose behind the formulation of Bharat Sevak Samaj is to initiate a nation wide, non official and non political organization with the objective of enabling individual citizens to contribute, in the form of an organized co-operative effort, to the implementation of the National Development Plan
Functions
1. The Samaj will render assistance:
a. In restoring and improving the social health of the community by Building up standards of honesty in public conduct, public administration and business relations.Creating a Social atmosphere conducive to the observance of such standard.
b. In creating social awareness among the people with regard to conditions and problems, and their own obligations, and the need for unity, tolerance and mutual help.
c. In conducting campaigns and in the adoption of practical measures
i. For the conservation and best utilization of the public and private resources.
ii. For promoting the practice of economy in the various spheres of country's life.
iii. For detecting and rooting out waste and inefficiency in the nation's activities.
iv. For the general adoption of the practice of austerity.
d.  improvement of sanitation in village is one of the important activity of BSS.


4.     The Tuberculosis Association of India (TAI)
The Tuberculosis Association of India (TAI) was founded in 1939. It is one of the oldest and largest voluntary organizations having its affiliates all over the country. It was set up in February, 1939 as a registered society by incorporating the King Emperor's Anti-Tuberculosis Fund and King George Thanks-giving (Anti-Tuberculosis) Fund.
Its main objectives are:
·         The prevention, control, treatment and relief of tuberculosis.
·         The encouragement of and assistance in the establishment throughout India of State Associations having objectives similar in whole or in part to those of the Association.
·         The affiliation or control of and the rendering of assistance to any institution having objectives similar in whole or in part to the objects of the Association.
Main Activities of the TAI are:
·         Publication of the prestigious Indian Journal of Tuberculosis quarterly since 1953. it is the only journal in India devoted exclusively to the cause of tuberculosis and chest diseases.
·         Organization of the National Conference on Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases (NATCON). Since the year 1939 the Association is organizing an annual conference wherein around 500 delegates from all over India .
·         Providing quality diagnostic and treatment services through its New Delhi TB Centre.

5. Family Planning Association of India.


Family Planning Association of India was established in 1949. FPA India has seven decades of experience in the field of sexual and reproductive health. It works in close partnerships with central and state governments, NGOs and national and international funding agencies.
Currently, FPA India is a premier civil society organization delivering essential health services focusing on sexual and reproductive health in over 18 states and union territories of India, in regions where key developmental indicators are poor and gender disparities are high. 

Functions-
1.     Reproductive Health and Family Planning Clinics (RHFPC) are static clinics which provide sexual and reproductive health services. These services include sexuality counselling, contraceptives services including emergency contraception, safe abortion care.
2.     Outreach model of service delivery. Satellite clinics   are  located close to the community, staffed by trained providers delivering a limited range of SRH services .
3.     Mobile outreach units- Services are provided through equipped vehicles reaching fixed locations at fixed times. Contraceptive and other SRH as well as non-SRH services may be provided.
4.      Community-based distributors or providers These are community volunteers trained and supported to conduct home visits for identifying and following up with target populations for the distribution of contraceptive products and other SRH-related commodities.
5.     Family Planning Association of India (FPA India) creates awareness among marginalised and vulnerable women on sexual and reproductive health, including HIV and sexual and gender based violence (SGBV), and empowers them to take action when their rights are violated. Men are also sensitised about the patriarchal system and how it affects women’s health and rights.
6.     Encouraging women and girls to be self-sufficient through skilling is an important initiative under the gender and empowerment portfolio. Women and girls are taught skills that provide them opportunities to work within or outside their ecosystem or become self-employed
