School
health services or school health program
“School health
services is the comprehensive i.e. integrated preventive, promotive
,curative & rehabilitative services to the school
children & the teachers & all the supportive staff
& provide remedial measure & referral
services when it is needed”.
School health
is an important branch of Community Health Nursing. According to modern
concept, school health services is an economical and powerful means of raising
community health, and more important, awareness about health in future
generation .
The beginning
of school health services in India dates back to 1909, when for the first time
medical examination of school children was carried out in Baroda city. The
Bhore committee 1946, reported that school health services were practically
nonexistent in India, and where they existed, they were in under-developed
state. In 1953, the secondary education committee emphasized the
need for medical examination of pupils and school feeding programmes .in 1960 ,
the govt . of India constituted a school health committee to assess
the standards of health and nutrition of school
children . The committee submitted report in 1961, which include
very useful recommendations. during the five year plans , many state
governments have provided for school health , and
school feeding programmes .
In 1977
centrally sponsored school health program was started. In 1979 the school
health scheme was handed over to states for implementation. Now all states have
their own school health programs but main objectives and activities are more or
less same.

positive health
02. The prevention of
diseases among school children.
03. Early diagnosis ,
treatment for disorders among school children
04. Follow-up of
defects identified.
05. Awakening health
consciousness in school children.
06. The provision of
healthful school environment
HEALTH PROBLEMS OF THE SCHOOL
CHILDREN
Any discussion of a school health services must be
based on the local health problems of the school child, theses
may fall in the following categories
01 Malnutrition- protein
energy malnutrition and deficiency diseases.
02 Communicable
diseases-includes measles, chicken pox, typhoid, tuberculosis, hepatitis etc
03 worm infestation.-round
worm, hook worm, pinworm. Tape worm etc.
04 Dental problems.
Dental carries gum inflammation and bleeding gums
05 Mental Health
Problems. Maladjustment, autism, anxiety disorder dyslexia etc.
06 Skin problems.-
scabies warts eczema acne etc.
07 Eye Problems. Eye
infection, mayopia, hypermetropia etc.
