Self-development can be defined, in general terms, as gaining
information needed in a person's working life, acquiring new information and
skills open to the change, learning for the sake of learning and maintaining
all this knowledge, throughout one's life
Personal development is a lifelong process. It is a way
for people to assess their skills and qualities, consider their aims in life
and set goals in order to realize and maximize their potential.
Personal
development covers activities that improve awareness and
identity, develop talents and potential, build human
capital and facilitate employability, enhance the quality of life and
contribute to the realization of dreams and aspirations.
Personal development is a push. It’s a struggle. It’s a
challenge. There wouldn’t be any winning without a challenge. That’s what life
is all about. It’s the struggle and the challenge to develop ourselves and our
skills to see what we can create in the way of value in the marketplace. It’s
taking those skills and value to the marketplace and seeing what it will return
for us.
Process of Self-Development:
The process of self-development
includes:
I. Developing Awareness about Self
II. Adopting Methods of Development.
I. Developing Awareness about
Self:
Personal
effectiveness is increased through self-awareness. Self-awareness is the level
of awareness/understanding of an individual of his own self.
According
to the Johari model, there are two dimensions for understanding the self:
1.
Those aspects of a person’s behaviour and style that are known to himself, and
2.
Those aspects of his behaviour known to those with whom he interacts (others).
This
can be done in the following ways:
(a)
He should analyse his self and identify his strengths and weaknesses.
(b)
He should understand his behaviour and emotional state and try to relate it
with others.
(c)
On identifying himself, if he analyses weaknesses, he should try to overcome
them and develop his strength.
(d)
Change is the essence of self-development. He should be open to change and if
he is unknown to self, he should accept the advice of others and develop a
positive mind set.
(e)
He should adjust his behaviour through change in interpersonal processes.
II. Adopting Methods of Development.
This can be done in the following ways:
1. Constructive
behaviour:
The
person should engage in constructive behaviour which leads to goal attainment.
This can be developed by managing stimuli that affect his behaviour. He should
remove stimuli that evoke undesirable behaviour and promote stimuli that evoke
desirable behaviour.
New
behaviours can also be created by introducing new stimuli or rearranging the
existing stimuli. Once the stimuli are created, rearranged, reduced or
increased, the manager measures his behaviour arising out of that stimuli and
reinforces it in order to achieve the goals.
2. Time
management:
The
person is usually constrained by time in achieving the organisational goals.
Time management reduces the elements that lead to waste of time. Internal organisational
factors resulting in waste of time are improper planning, overwork, failure to
delegate, postponing work etc.
The
external factors are noise, unnecessary meetings and travelling, incomplete
information about the environment etc. He should reduce these elements and
manage his time properly to understand himself, others and relate his knowledge
with organisational goals.
3. Upgrading
knowledge:
The
person should not only do the assigned task or formal organisational
activities, but also enrich their knowledge by reading good books, magazines
and journals in the field of his specializaiton. Study of literature leads to
self-development and contributes to organisational goals. Attending seminars,
conferences and workshops and e learning is also helpful in this regard.
TIPS FOR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT-
Do
not avoid social interactions:
Just
because you feel you aren’t good-looking, do not avoid meeting people. Look for
opportunities, go to different events, dress style also make you feel positive.
So take care of look style and way of talking.
Know
your positives:
If
every individual has his or her limitations, then he or she also has positives.
These positive are what you need to concentrate on. Know your strengths.
Acknowledge them and work with them. It would definitely help you to overcome
your challenges and take you into a long run.
Get Out Of Your
Comfort Zone
Be
prepared to challenge yourself by learning new skills. For most people it’s a
huge learning curve to start an online business, so you must have a very
positive, open-minded attitude and embrace any changes you need to make.
Don’t Fear Failure
Don’t
worry about making mistakes, you will make loads in your journey and a lot of
them may hold you back for a while, but once you’ve made them, these methods
can be eliminated and you can move on.
Make Yourself
Known
Brand
yourself in all your communications. Whatever content you put out there is make
sure it shows you in a positive light. It’s you’re trying to sell to other
people, so the more personal the message the better.
Come Across As A
Leader
Whatever
you learn and however little you know, use it well. Become an authority on
whatever topic you tackle, then you have the knowledge to pass it on to others
and if you put your message across in the right way, you will attract
followers. Express yourself and always do, what you say.
Effort And
Consistency
This
is linked to your daily plan but is crucial. Marketing your business every day
with relevant and sustained effort is much better than huge bursts of activity
once a month. Effort and regularity will win the day every time.
Don’t Give Up
I
know this sounds very difficult but you can change your defeat into your win by
continue efforts. You can make it through with only a few more weeks or months
of effort. So do not give up try and try till you get your ambitions fulfilled.
