JOINTS-
Joints are the places where 2 or more bones meet.
CLASSIFICATION OF JOINTS
Joints are classified into
three main types
Fixed joints
Slightly movable joints
Freely movable joints
Fixed joints- Most fibrous joints are also called
"fixed" or "immovable" joints. These joints have no joint
cavity and are connected via fibrous connective tissue. The skull bones are
connected by fibrous joints called sutures.
Slightly movable joints- A slightly movable joint is
defined as an articulation between bones in which the motion is limited due to
presence of cartilage. So it is also known as cartilaginous joint.
Freely movable joints- These joints are
capable of free movement. there is a synovial cavity between two ends of the
bone. It is filled with synovial fluid. So theses joints are also called as
synovial joints.
Synovial joints allow for smooth
movements between the adjacent bones. The joint is surrounded by an articular
capsule which is also known as synovial cavity filled with synovial fluid. The
articulating surfaces of the bones are covered by a thin layer of smooth
articular cartilage. Ligaments support the joint by holding the bones together
and resisting excess or abnormal joint motions.
Freely movable or synovial joints
are further classified into –
Ø Ball and socket joint
Ø Hinge joint
Ø Pivot joint
Ø Plane joint
Ø Condyloid joint
Ø Saddle joint
