CHOKING-
´ Choking occurs when
breathing is stopped by a constricted or obstructed throat or windpipe. In some
cases the air flow is completely blocked, in other cases some amount of air can
pass to the lungs and causes asphyxia.
´
CAUSES OF CHOKING-
Ø
Adults usually choke when swallowing food
without chewing properly and laughing and talking while eating or drinking.
Ø
Being unconscious and breathing in vomit
Ø
Children usually choke from placing objects
in their mouths. They normally do this out of curiosity. However, they may also
choke when eating too quickly or when talking with food in their mouths.
SIGN AND
SYMPTOMS OF CHOKING-
´
Inability to speak.
´
Difficulty breathing.
´
Noisy breathing or high-pitched sounds
while inhaling.
´
Weak, ineffective coughing.
´
Typical posture of holding neck and mouth
open.
´
Bluish skin color.
´
Loss of consciousness, if blockage is not
cleared in some time.
First Aid in Choking
´
First ask, "Are you choking? Can you speak?"
´
DO NOT perform first aid if the person is coughing forcefully
and is able to speak.
´
A strong cough can
dislodge the object. Encourage the person to keep coughing to dislodge the
object.
´
If the person cannot speak or is having a hard time breathing.
´
We need to act fast to help the person. We can perform
´
back blows.
´
abdominal thrusts(Heimlich maneuver)
BACK BLOWS
´
Stand behind the person.
´
Wrap one arm around to support the person's upper body. Ask the
person to lean forward .
´
Use the heel of your other hand to give 5 sharp blows between
the person's shoulder blades.
´
Check if the object is dislodged.
´
If yes than it is ok
´
If no- abdominal thrusts
´
(Heimlich maneuver)
´
Stand behind the person and wrap your arms around the person's
waist.
´
Make a fist with one hand. Place the thumb side of your fist
just above the person's navel, well below the breastbone.
´
Grasp the fist tightly with your other hand.
´
Make a quick, upward and inward thrust with your fist.
´
Continue these thrusts 5 times or until the object is dislodged
´
Check if the object is dislodged.
´
If yes than it is ok
´
If no- perform back blows AND abdominal thrusts (5-and-5 approach)
´
Keep performing the 5-and-5 until the object is dislodged or the
person loses consciousness .
´
CALL FOR
MEDICAL AID – DIAL 112 OR ASK SOMEONE TO CALL 112 AND EXPLAIN THE SITUATION.
´
START
cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
