STEAM INHALATION
Steam
inhalation is an application of moist heat to the respiratory passage and it may
be plain or medicated. This procedure you may get in examination of fundamental
of nursing or in community health nursing.
OBJECTIVES OF STEAM INHALATION-
Steam
inhalation help in relieving inflamation of mucus membrane of respiratory tract
in acute respiratory infections and sinusitis.
Steam
inhalation helps in softening the thick mucus and help it’s expectoration from
the respiratory tract
Steam
inhalation help in moistening and warming the air specially in tracheostomy
when upper respiratory tract is bypassed.
Steam
inhalation also help in relieving congestion and edema of larynx.
Steam
inhalation help in providing antiseptic effect when it is used with some
medications such as menthol, tr. Benzoin or eucalyptus .
Steam
inhalation also help in relieving spasm of mucous membrane of respiratory
tract.
CONTRAINDICATION-
Steam
inhalation should be avoided in following patients.
Infants and
very old patients.
Patient with
lung cancer.
Patient with
severe headache
Patient
having High fever
PREPARATION OF ARTICLES-
A procedure
tray should contain-
Nelson’s
inhaler/electric steam inhaler
A bowl with
tissue paper/face towel
A sputum mug
Gauze piece
and cotton swab in a bowl
Medicine and
ounce glass
A big towel
A kettle of
boiling water
A bowl with
spirit swab
Apart from
this procedure tray
we will take
one extra blanket/sheet and a cardiac table.
STEPS OF PROCEDURE-
Explain the
procedure to the patient.
Ask the
patient to use washroom before the procedure as the procedure ill take time.
Wash hands
before the procedure
Auscultate
the chest of patient for assessment.
Place the
patient in sitting position near the cardiac table.
Prepare
inhaler by filling it with boiling water and plug the spout of the inhaler by
cotton swab and mouth piece with gauze piece. (or you can use electric inhaler)
Place the
inhaler on cardiac table in a basin and cover with a towel to prevent
spillage and burning.
Remove the plug
and ask patient to inhale by mouth and exhale through the nose for 15 minutes.
Cover the
patient with blanket or sheet.
Keep sputum
cup and face towel on cardiac table for use by the patient to cough and wipe
the mouth as needed
After the
procedure remove articles and keep the patient in comfortable position and
cover with sheet and ask to remain there for at least one hour.
Replace
articles to their proper place after proper cleaning.
Record the
procedure in nursing record with
effectiveness and condition of the patient
