TECHNIQUES OF LEADERSHIP-
There
are mainly three types of leadership techniques:
Ø
Authoritarian
Ø
Democratic
Ø
Laissez fair
AUTHORITARIAN
LEADERSHIP-
•
In this
type of leadership technique the leader determines the policy, procedure and
activities in the group.
•
Authoritarian leadership induces greater
dependency on the leader which results in marked inter member irritability and
aggressiveness.
•
There are low frequencies of suggestion for
group action and group policy.
•
This also shows dissatisfaction in the group
activities which again result in low quality of productivity.
•
There is minimal or no role of group in team
decsions and plans.
DEMOCRATIC
LEADERSHIP-
§
In this technique the leader encourages
participation by members in deciding group matters and behaves in a friendly
and helpful manner to the members.
§
The group also provides technical assistance
and suggestions for alternative procedures.
§
Democratic leadership produces low dependency
on the leader. There are low incidence of inter-member irritability and
aggressiveness. High frequencies of suggestions for group action and group
policy can be appreciated. This result in great satisfaction in group members
for their group activities including quantity and quality of the work.
§
This is also a fact that democratic technique
is human relation approach, which is in keeping with democratic values.
§
It increases interdependence for all group
members and hence increases their morale.
§
The advantages of democratic leadership
depends upon the demands of the situation.
LAISSEZ-FAIRE
LEADERSHIP-
•
Laissez-faire leadership is a hands-off
approach where leaders give employees significant autonomy to make decisions
and complete tasks with minimal supervision.
•
In this technique the leader allows complete
freedom for decisions and and activity, keeping his own initiative for
suggestions to a minimum.
•
This type of leadership is effective with
experienced and self-motivated employees who can manage themselves and with
teams that have the expertise to make sound decisions without constant
oversight.
•
It is also effective in creative fields where
autonomy can foster innovation and unique solutions.
This type of leadership have
some drawbacks such as-
•
Lack of direction:
It can be detrimental if
employees are not good at setting deadlines or managing projects on their own,
leading to poor performance.
•
Accountability issues:
A lack of clarity can lead to confusion and
make it difficult to hold individuals accountable.
•
Not suitable for all:
The
style is ineffective in situations that require high levels of oversight,
precision, or immediate, centralized decision-making.
