ROLE
AND RESPONSIBLITIES OF NURSING SUPERVISOR
Ø Supervisors
are the middle level managers so the have following types of responsibilities.
Ø Upward
responsibilities
Ø Downward
responsibilities
Ø Responsibilities
during supervision
Ø Upward
responsibilities
· Identify
the activities the authorities need from him/her, either institutional
(hospital) settings or community settings.
· Make
arrangements to carry out identified activity in best possible way.
· Always
keep in touch with the higher authorities about what is being done or doing.
· Suggest
measures to improve efficiency of health personnel or nursing personnel and
efficiency of performance.
· Act
as a liaison between higher authorities and subordinates (nursing staff)
interpreting the requirements of the authorities.
· Timely
refer matters to immediate officers in hierarchy which are required to draw
their attention to deal with.
· Timely
submission of staff evaluation report to the administrators as and when sought
by them
Ø Downward
responsibilities
· Assist
in selecting, orienting and training new staff and students.
· Teach
them to demonstrate concern decorum, manners, tact, and courtesy in their day
to day dealings.
· Help
them effectively, humanly communicate with their clients and all others
concerned
· Build
good interpersonal relationships among workers.
· Assign
duties and responsibilities to right staff to perform right job at right time.
· Help
subordinate staff to perform their job effectively when needed.
· Manage
for their leave, day offs and rotation plans.
· Appraise
the nurses’ performance for guidance.
· Help
the nurses adjust to situations when needed.
· Assist
the nurses to take pride in their work, urging them to do their best with
dedication, human concern and sense of involvement.
· Help
them develop value system that would be beneficial to clients at all levels.
Ø Responsibilities
during supervision
· Supervisor
has specific role and responsibility during-
Ø Home
visiting
Ø Clinic
supervision
Ø School
or other community organization
Ø Home visiting
During
home visiting the supervisor is expected to make specific observation on: -
· The
approach to the family.
· The
action taken by the worker to meet the need or problem of the family.
· Either
standing order is observed adequately or not?
· The
response of health teachings performed previously.
· The
plan made with the family about further course of action.
· The
nursing techniques followed, and
· Whether
all aspects of health problems dealt or not?
Ø Clinic
supervision
Supervisor
is also expected to visit the clinic, where he/she has to make observation on:
-
· Physical
set up of the Clinic.
· Sterilization
of equipment.
· Nursing
procedures being carried out.
· Check
clinic records maintained by the staff.
· Health
teachings being carried out for patient and their attendance.
· Supply,
storage and maintenance of drugs and supplies.
Ø School
or other community organization
Supervisor
is also expected to visit school and related community organization for with
the staff for: -
· Helping
in identifying needs/problems of the school children/community people.
· Assistance
in planning the health program for community
· Guidance
to implement the plan by providing supplies and materials.
· Checking
the records maintained by them.
· Conducting
individual and group conferencing.
· Appraising
the efficient and effective service rendered duly.
