Techniques of SUPERVISION (ENGLISH)

Ø Observation

        Directly observing the work of staff or students

        Helps identify strengths and areas for improvement

        Can be planned or unplanned

        Example: Watching an ANM conduct immunization to assess technique and communication.

Ø Guidance and Demonstration

        Demonstrating correct procedures or skills

        Giving individual or group guidance

        Encourages learning by doing

        Example: Demonstrating proper handwashing before a procedure.

Ø Checking Records and Reports

        Reviewing registers, reports, and documentation

        Ensures accuracy and completeness

        Helps identify service gaps or errors

        Example: Checking ANC register for completeness of entries.

Ø Conference and Meetings

        Conducting individual or group conferences to discuss performance

        Promotes open communication and problem-solving

        Can be daily, weekly, or monthly

        Example: Staff meeting to review immunization coverage.

Ø Field Visits / Rounds

        Supervisor visits health facilities or community sites

        Observes activities and interacts with clients

        Offers on-the-spot support and feedback

        Example: LHV visiting subcenters OR accompany   ANMs for supervision during home visits.

Ø Supportive Supervision

        Focuses on mentoring, coaching, and motivation

        Emphasizes problem-solving rather than fault-finding

        Builds staff confidence and teamwork

        Goal: Continuous improvement, not punishment.

Ø Evaluation and Feedback

        Comparing performance with set standards

        Providing constructive feedback

        Encouraging self-assessment

        Tip: Feedback should be specific, timely, and supportive for example finding error in reporting and telling correct technique of calculation
