EVALUATION

Evaluation is the systematic and ongoing
process of determining the extent to which organizational goals and outcomes
have been achieved. Evaluation is a decision making process that leads to
suggestions for actions to improve participants.
Ø
Evaluation is an ongoing activity that begins
at the first identification of the need for a programme/activity process,
throughout the planning and implementing
phases and extends well beyond the length of the programme/activity itself.
Definitin
of Evaluation –
Ø
Evaluation is defined as the systemic
acquisition and assessment process of information to provide useful feedback
about some work, person, project or situation.
Objectives
of Evaluation –
Ø
To determine participant’s progress towards
the achievements of the goal of the programme.
Ø
To facilitate the maintenance of strength and
elimination of weaknesses on the part of participants.
Ø
To motivate the participants.
Ø
To assess the effectiveness of program,
activity or nursing process
Ø
To modify or continue the plan of patient
care or program/ activity .
Ø
To promote quality improvement in patient
care or program.
Process
of Evaluation –
Evaluation
process involves following steps-

Identifying the purpose of evaluation
Ø
Identifying the time frame
Ø
Determining when to evaluate.
Ø
Selecting the evaluators.
Ø
Choosing an evaluation design/frame or model.
Ø
Selection of instruments/tools.
Ø
Data collection.
Ø
Interpretation of data.
Ø
Reporting the findings.
Types of Evaluation –
It
always depends upon the objects to be evaluated and the objective of evaluation.
There
are two main types of evaluation:

Formative Evaluation
Ø
Summative Evaluation
Ø Formative
Evaluation:
Ø it is
ongoing evaluation to measure the progress throughout the programme, activity
or course. It begins from that very moment when the programme starts and till
it complete or finish.
Ø Formative
evaluation gives feedback at intervals. This evaluation enables the participant
/ staff to adujst activities in accordance with progress made or lack of it. It
should in no way be used as to certify a final judgment or evaluation.
Ø
summative Evaluation:
Ø
it is the final evaluation in terms of
attainment of objectives and is carried out at the end of the period of
instructions or program or activity for certification.
Ø
It describes the extent to which programme
has attained its objectives.
Ø
It provides guidelines for decision and
further course of action.
Ø
It is the final result of evaluation which is
to be submitted .
Tools of Evaluation –
Ø
Selection of tools of evaluation depends on
the type of evaluation. For obtaining necessary information various type of
instruments are used, like:

Questionnaire
Ø
Rating scale
Ø
Attitude scale
Ø
Check list
Ø
Self-report/ self-appraisal
Ø
Anecdotal record or reports
Check
list- it is the most
used evaluation method.
Ø
It can be used to evaluate any activity,
skill, attitude of the participant or staff.
Ø

developed by supervisor or evaluator as per need
